The Truth About Mouthguard Warranties

Most well known mouthguard manufacturers provide some type of dental warranty that provides dental insurance if you sustain an injury to one or all of your teeth. Under Armour, for example, covers up to a maximum liability of $32,000, but the insurance is very limited, covering on $500 per injured or replaced tooth. BATTLE mouthguards has a maximum liability $5,000 per incident, covering $156.25 per injured or replaced tooth. Other well known mouthguard companies such as Shock Doctor and SISU have dental warranties. Sock Doctor covers up to $10,000 while SISU takes it one step further with a $35,000 warranty. But the insurance is limited to $313 (Shock Doctor) and $940 (SISU) per injured or replaced tooth. SISU also does not cover previous dental work like caps, crowns, veneers, bridges, or dentures. In addition, most dental warranties are only good for one (1) year from the date of purchase and you will need your sales receipt to prove when you purchased your mouthguard. If you have dental insurance some mouthguard companies won't pay for anything until after you have exhausted all monies that your dental insurance will provide for the dental procedure you require from your injury.

Mouthguard warranties from the "major" manufacturers all seem to have the same wording within their warranty. "The mouthguard purchased to be free of defects in material and workmanship which could cause damage or injury to a tooth or teeth the purchaser herein when properly used in a supervised athletic contest or coach-supervised training session" This means the mouthguard has to be proven to have manufacturer defects that caused the injury. It really doesn't seem possible to me that anyone could prove a mouthguard has defects. To my knowledge and my research, I have not read about one claim that was filed and won by an individual. Don't forget, no mouthguard can completely protect everyone. An intense blow to the teeth can affect different people in different ways.

If you've ever had a chipped, cracked, loosened or even lost tooth, you know how much a trip to the dentist can cost. If not, let me educate you about dental fees. If you chipped a tooth and you are a candidate for dental bonding (which is basically a patch job that is bonded with a resin that is the color of your tooth) typically costs $200-$300 per tooth depending on the complexity, extent of the process and the part of the country you live in. Veneering (which is a thin shell of porcelain that is also tooth colored and cemented onto your existing tooth or a lightly prepped tooth). This restoration will usually last longer than bonding and will set you back anywhere from $900-$2,500. Crowning is usually the last resort (which is a shell that covers all of your tooth) and will cost you about the same as a veneer. If you loose a tooth completely, you will either need a bridge or an implant. The cost of these procedures skyrockets to about $5000.

The bottom line is, in regards to the dental warranty, do your own research. Decide for yourself if its worthless. I guess it's better to have some form of warranty than not having one at all. If you can find an instance where somebody filed a claim against a mouthguard company because of damage to their teeth and actually won, please let me know.
