Traumatic brain injuries and concussions have become a growing epidemic worldwide in organized sports, especially in American football. The issue of head trauma has prompted several companies to provide preventative solutions. Today, athletes are increasingly bigger, faster and stronger. Hits or collisions are amplified because of these factors.
Each year, about 3.8 million sports related concussions occur, but some experts estimate that almost 2 million more concussions go undetected. Parents, coaches and athletes want some answers. Researchers, engineers and scientist may have found a solution, all packed into a mouthguard. These new, advanced inventions, can detect if the wearer has a concussion. Currently, most concussion diagnosis is subjective and inaccurate and aren't detected until after a game and multiple tests. These innovative companies want to eliminate the guesswork of a concussion test.

Here are a few such companies paving the way, Prevent Biometrics ( a subsidiary of the Cleveland Clinic) has created a mouthguard that can detect potential concussion-causing impacts. The Mamori mouthguard, which has built-in sensors that can detect hidden concussions that an athlete wouldn't be able to see normally. SISU Sense mouthguard uses a three-axis accelerometer and high performance wireless processor to record when a major impact occurs. Fitguard is a mouthguard that detects the severity of an impact to the head, then uses LEDs embedded in the mouthguard to measure how intense the impact was. HitIQ designed a mouthguard that can detect head impacts and can improve the process of concussion assessment. BATTLE Sports Science has created a chin strap designed for an American football helmet utilizes patent pending technology to measure and calculate the force and duration of a hit to a players helmet. If a hit measures at a certain level, an LED light alerts coaches and referees to the possible injury.
All of these innovative products seem a little difficult to purchase as of the publish date of this post. Its hard to pinpoint why this the case. The companies could still be in the testing phases. The BATTLE Sports Science chin strap isn't even available on the company website.
Prevent Biometrics has a team special price, but you will have to inquire first. I guess we will just have to wait for this technology to come mainstream.
The only impact sensing mouthguard available for purchase that I could find is the SISU Sense mouthguard. SISU sense mouthguard is a boil-and-bite mouthguard that has embedded electronics that can report head impacts to your smart phone. SISU thinks there mouthguard is better than all of the other impact sensing mouthguards that are in development because of the snug fit that can be achieved with their special reinforced thermoplastic material. The material also dampens impact forces because of its patented perforation patterns. The mouthguard can also be thinner than mouthguards made of EVA because of the density of the material every SISU mouthguard is made out of. Another advantage to the SISU sense mouthguard is the battery. The battery will last one season without the need to charge after or before every game.
