Sports participation in the United States has normally risen every year even while American football has seen a significant decrease in participation levels. But recently in the United States, the NFHS(National Federation Of State High School Associations) released its 2018-2019 study stating that participation in high school sports declined for the first time in 30 years. The last decline in sports participation was in the 1988-89 school year. This downward trend is alarming. More and more children are passing on playing sports or being active because they are being lured into activities such as video games and social media.

I don't claim to be a medical doctor or come from a medical background. I'm only speaking from personal experience. I strongly recommend that before you consider exercising or take up a sport, you consult with your physician, especially if you haven't exercised for an extended period of time.

Parents should encourage their children to participate in sports at an early age. Children can be influenced by their parents acting as role models when they participate in recreational leagues, jogging, biking, or swimming. As a parent, you have the responsibility to encourage, not discourage your child by being as quiet aspkossible on the sidelines. The benefits of playing a sport or multiple sports has been researched and documented to be tremendous. Even though playing sports can be an emotional, mental, physical challenge, experts agree that the positives of participating in sports significantly outweighs the negatives.
