Manufacturer Product Info:

The SISU Aero Mouth Guard offers more protection with less mouth guard. Ideal for soccer, hockey, roller derby, lacrosse, basketball, and other contact team sports, SISU mouthguards feature a wide bite pad, rounded edges for comfort, and easy mold-ability to ensure a perfect fit. All SISU guards can be quickly and easily molded (and re-molded) at home with hot water. At only 1.6mm thick, or 50 percent thinner than conventional mouthguards, players wearing the super slim Aero can talk, breathe and hydrate with the guard in-place. Scientifically engineered with Diffusix technology, the non-compressible, perforated guard material distributes forces over a larger area to reduce risk of dental injury during competition. Guard is compatible with braces, but a dental professional should be consulted for fitting (Sizes Medium and Large are recommended for all ages wearing braces). Available in three sizes: Small fits the mouths of children ages 7-10, or athletes up to 5 feet tall; Medium fits average mouths, or athletes between 5 feet and 6 feet tall; Large fits larger mouths, or athletes over 6 feet tall. SISU mouth guards are backed by a $35,000, one-year limited dental warranty. Guard is free of BPA, PVC, phthalates, and latex. Made in the USA.

Review:

I thought the SISU Aero might be a little different than the SISU Next Gen Max that I reviewed in the past, but I was wrong. The material is exactly the same, which is a good thing, but the Aero really isn't much different accept for the thickness and the fact that it comes in three different sizes based on your height ( Small, Medium and Large). I chose the Large size because I am over 6' but it wasn't any different than the Adult sized Next Gen Max, which was a little disappointing.

The Aero mouthguard is 1.6mm thick and the Next Gen Max is 2.6mm thick. The whole reason I wanted to review this mouthguard was because I felt like the Next Gen Max mouthguard was a little small for my mouth and I wanted to see if the Aero mourguard would cover more of my teeth. I would say it did, but not by much.

The mouthguard has a great system, but not error proof for selecting the right size mouthguard. SISU claims that the findings of extensive research and testing suggests that the taller you are, the larger your dental arch. Check out the sizing chart below.

Fitting Process

The fitting process calls for the water that will soften the material to be hot to the touch. I tried using hot water right out of the faucet and it didn't soften the material at all. I suggest boiling water on your stove and then letting it sit for a couple of minutes before submerging the mouthguard in the pan. The mouthguard also didn't burn my gums at all during the fitting process which is a really nice feature.

It actually took me two times of re-boiling and re-fitting before I got the fit I was looking for, which seems to be a reoccurring problem with SISU's wafer style mouthguards, but you can re-heat the mouthguard several times if you keep screwing the fitting process up. When you re-heat the material it shrinks back to its original form, which was really wild to see. After trying two times to get the right fit, the fit was really tight. Which is the most important, key advantage to this mouthguard. The tight fit will facilitate clear speech and enhance your performance during competition.

SISU has a whole line of mouthguards that are very thin from 1.6mm to 2.4mm, which is great for being able to communicate on the athletic field. The most incredible feature of their mouthguards is the strength of the high-tech thermoplastic material that they are made out of that will keep your teeth safe. They claim that the material is 50% stronger and has an 8x greater tensile strength than conventional mouthguard materials. Check out the chart below.

Overall, I really like this mouthguard and would highly recommend it. The only issue I have with this mouthguard and the Next Gen Max mouthguard that I have reviewed in the past is the way it fits in the back of the mouth, especially over or lack there of the first molar. Check out the picture below how it doesn't cover the cheek side of the tooth.

The SISU Next Gen Max fit exactly like this (Aero) mouthguard around my first molar.

It also doesn't come with a carrying case but you can purchase one through my Accessories page.

The Aero mouthguard ranks #4 in sports mouthguards on Amazon.

Pros + :

  • Comfortable tight fit

Cons - :

  • Very rigid material

  • Doesn't cover the cheek side of first molars

  • Doesn't come with a carrying case

  • Price is high

HOW I (The Author) TEST MOUTHGUARDS & WHY I CAN BE TRUSTED

My name is Ken Mitchell. I Have been fabricating custom mouthguards for more than 15 years and have been a dental technician for over 20 years. I also, have owned my own dental laboratory for over 20 years.

Besides having work experience with mouthguards, I know first hand the importance of mouthguards in the sports world. I have played several sports throughout my life at the hight school level, including basketball, football, baseball and beach volleyball. I am also a father to two sons and a daughter who have played Soccer, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Lacrosse and Baseball ever since they were in the first grade. From time to time I have used my children to test mouthguards to get a first-hand, real-world experience with custom mouthguards and store bought mouthguards.

I search for every mouthguard on the market. Then, I purchase (with my own funds) every mouthguard I review through places like Amazon, eBay or directly from the manufacturer, just like you would, then evaluate every mouthguard based on my expert opinion. I also comb the internet to find other reviews on durability to develop a better understanding of specific mouthguards pros and cons over an extended period of time.

Every mouthguard I review, is fitted and examined by me. The only time a mouthguard is fitted by another person besides me, would be my son, who plays college football. I use him mainly to fit and use mouthguards for weight training and football.

When I review a mouthguard it must pass certain criteria to rank in my top 10.

  • FIT- I believe this is the most important factor in evaluating a mouthguard, because without a tight fit, all of the other criteria can be thrown out the window. When wearing a mouthguard you shouldn't have to clench your teeth to stop the mouthguard from falling out. It should fit as tight as possible.

  • Comfort- Comfort goes hand in hand with the fit, if the the mouthguard is comfortable you wont get distracted by focusing on your mouthguard, instead you will be focused on the game and perform at your highest level.

  • Protection/Tooth Coverage- With advancement in materials, mouthguards that are thick, aren't necessarily more protective than thinner mouthguards. Brands like SISU and Game On, provide thinner mouthguards that are 40-100% stronger than EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) that is used by most mouthguard manufacturers. A proper fitting mouthguard should cover at least your first molars to provide adequate protection. A mouthguard shouldn't extend past your second molar because it could trigger the gag reflex. Also, your mouthguard should cover your gums or the roots of your teeth.

  • Sport- Almost every mouthguard on the market is made for use in multiple sports but there are a few mouthguards that are designed for weight training or exercising. I will break down which sport each mouthguard is better for.

  • Design- I examine the color variations available and the overall design of the mouthguard, the bells and whistles if you will.

  • Fitting process- Most boil-n-bite mouthguards are fitted with the same process, although some fitting processes are more uncomfortable than others.

Remember to always take into consideration that every mouthguard may not suit your specific requirements. Each person is different and everyone's mouth is unique to that person. The Mouthguard Review can only evaluate the initial fit of a mouthguard and only "real world" use can show long term durability and other design flaws.
